In fact, several HR friends have told me: given two candidates with comparable skills, one in a neat shirt or suit and the other in ripped jeans and an oversized polo shirt, they will undoubtedly pick the former. Yet they would never tell the rejected candidate that poor attire cost them the job.

A messy combination will make you look out of place with the company culture and hurt your interview performance. Classic, sleek black, grey and navy are the safest choices. Avoid overly flashy styles, as they may create biased impressions. Take shirts as an example. You may love striped or plaid shirts, or favor pink and bright yellow ones, yet they are less formal than plain white or light blue shirts.
